Santiago (James)

Who was James?
James was one of the disciples of Jesus. According to the Biblical texts, he was a fisherman, son of Zebedee and brother of the apostle John.

Why did he walk?
Tradition says that after the death of Jesus, James travelled to Spain in obedience to Jesus’ command to “God and make disciples of all nations….to the end of the earth”. In that time, the end of the earth was the north east region of the peninsula known as Gallaecia, and in particular Finisterre (the end of the earth).

James wanted to get to Spain in order to share something that had changed his life with the whole world: his relationship with Jesus, the Son of God. He wanted everyone to be able to experience the abundant life that He promises and for them to know that He is alive.

Who did he follow?
James was a follower of Jesus. And, in the same way, those of us who from part of the Fuente del Peregrino, also consider ourselves to be followers of Jesus. We believe that Jesus is the Way, the truth and the life. Like James, we have experienced what it is to have Jesus in our lives, and so we understand that without Jesus, the Camino de Santiago would not exist. If you are searching for answers on your Camino, we invite you to do as James did, and also be a follower of Jesus.
